Meet Monika from India

The city of Kolkata, India is a sprawling mass of dense streets, smog, vehicles, and people living out their lives. Many people who are born in Kolkata may never leave the city during their life.

New York has a population of about 8.5 million people, living in roughly 300 square miles. By contrast, Kolkata is home to nearly 15 million people, living in 75 square miles.

In such a densely populated place, it’s easy for a lonely child to be forgotten or looked over. It’s estimated that there are up to 100,000 children living on the street in Kolkata.

Many of these children face a life of struggle and poverty. There is little hope for any sort of opportunity for them. These are the individuals who many grow up living their entire lives within the city, never having a chance or reason to leave.

This could have been Monika’s fate. Before she was taken in by the home leaders at a Kidstown supported children’s home, she was an orphan on the streets. Both of her parents had died from HIV, and she was left to take care of her younger brother on her own. She was facing a life of extreme poverty with no family and no support.

But Monika was taken in, and she is now living in a loving, caring environment. She is being taken care of by loving home leaders, and is in turn helping taken care of other children coming into the home. Instead of a life of struggle, she has a life of opportunity ahead of her. She is studying hard in school and looking forward to her future with hope.

Sponsoring a child like Monika is an opportunity to truly transform their life. It gives them the chance to live a life of hope.

Thanks to our sponsors and donors, we are are able to give children hope. If you’re interested, there are many ways you can support Kidstown!
